Summer Camp Auditions - FAQ
Welcome to our Summer Camp Auditions page! Our goal is to create a supportive, fun, and professional environment where students can showcase their creativity and prepare for their best performance. Below, you’ll find all the information families and students need to feel confident and prepared.
At Allegra, we believe every student belongs on stage.
Auditions are not about being perfect — they are about preparation, effort, storytelling, and willingness to try. Our directors are looking for students who are focused, collaborative, and open to growth.
Every role matters. Casting decisions are made thoughtfully to create the strongest possible learning experience and ensemble.
All students participating in Allegra productions are part of our P.I.T. Program: Performers in Training.
This means auditions are part of a bigger process. Students are developing real performing skills — not just learning lines and songs.
As Performers in Training, students are expected to:
-
Arrive prepared and ready to focus
-
Support their fellow castmates
-
Take direction with a positive attitude
-
Demonstrate responsibility and professionalism
-
Take creative risks and embrace challenges
Performing is a craft that develops over time. Each audition, rehearsal, and performance helps students build confidence, resilience, artistry, and ensemble awareness.
At Allegra, students are not just cast members — they are young artists in training.
-
Auditions for Junior and Junior-Teen Shows are for role placement, not participation. Every registered camper will be cast.
-
Auditions for our Premiere Teen Camp is required for participation.
-
Students sign up in 30-minute increments and should arrive at their assigned time.
-
Our audition motto: Early is on time. On time is late. Late is unacceptable.
While each student is only in the audition room briefly, the full audition process takes time. Students should be prepared to wait patiently and bring water, quiet activities, and their audition materials.

Choosing the right song helps directors see your strengths.
Tips for success:
-
Choose a song that matches the style and energy of the show.
-
Please do not sing a song from the show for which you are auditioning.

Pick material that shows your vocal strengths and acting ability
-
Select your best 16–32 bars — keep it focused and clear
-
Musical theatre songs are required (no pop songs)
-
Bring clearly marked sheet music in the correct key for the accompanist
For younger singers, consider songs like "Castle on a Cloud" from Les Miserables, or "Consider Yourself" from Oliver.
Directors are looking for:
-
Preparation and focus
-
Positive attitude

Strong storytelling choices
-
Willingness to take direction
-

As part of Allegra’s P.I.T. Program (Performers in Training), all students will participate in callbacks.
Callbacks are an important part of the learning process and give directors the opportunity to see students working with new material, taking direction, and collaborating with others. This helps us make thoughtful casting decisions while also giving students valuable real-world audition experience.
At callbacks, students will be asked to:
-
Read sides (short monologues or short scenes)
-
Sing specific music cuts from the show
-
Explore different character choices
Callback materials will be provided ahead of time. Students are expected to learn the material to the best of their ability.
Some callbacks will include a dance call. Students will be taught a short dance combination and will perform it in small groups. Directors are looking for focus, effort, musicality, and willingness to try — not perfection.
Students should come to callbacks ready to stay flexible, take creative risks, and have fun exploring the material.
If a student is unable to attend auditions in person, they may submit a virtual audition.
Virtual auditions must be submitted no later than 11:59pm on the Friday evening before auditions.
To submit a virtual audition:
-
Record your audition song (and monologue if required for your program level)
-
Upload the video to Google Drive or YouTube (unlisted)
-
Make sure Google Drive settings are set so “Anyone with the link can view.”
-
Email the video link to sarah@allegrasma.com
Students submitting virtual auditions should follow the same preparation guidelines as in-person auditions, including:
-
Performing a 16–32 bar cut of a musical theatre song in the style of the show
-
Including a clear slate introduction
-
Demonstrating strong storytelling and preparation
Virtual auditions will be reviewed alongside in-person auditions as part of the casting process.
