Allegra Talks Welcomes Stephen L. Ball, Former Dean of Students at Harvard Law School

College Admissions from the Inside

At Allegra School of Music & Arts, we believe that supporting our students means nurturing not only their artistic growth, but also their confidence, curiosity, and sense of possibility beyond the studio. This winter, we’re excited to launch Allegra Talks, a new monthly speaker series created exclusively for our students — and to welcome a truly exceptional guest for our first event.

On Saturday, January 24, Allegra will host Stephen L. Ball, Founder & CEO of Wisdem USA and former Dean of Students at Harvard Law School, for an interactive conversation focused on the college admissions process and what students need to know to navigate it with clarity and confidence.

What Colleges Really Look For

The college admissions landscape can feel overwhelming — especially for students who are balancing academics, creative passions, and big questions about their future. In this Allegra Talks session, Mr. Ball will offer students an insider’s perspective on how admissions officers actually evaluate applicants, looking well beyond grades and test scores.

Drawing on his experience in higher education, law, and student mentoring, he’ll explore topics such as:

  • How students can communicate who they are authentically

  • Why storytelling and personal voice matter in applications and essays

  • What makes an applicant memorable

  • How creative students can highlight their strengths with confidence

Rather than a formal lecture, this session is designed to be conversational and student-centered, with time for questions and discussion.

Especially Valuable for Young Artists

For students in music, theater, and the arts, the college process often includes an added layer of complexity. Personal statements, essays, and interviews require students to articulate not just what they’ve done, but why it matters to them. This makes the skills discussed in Allegra Talks especially relevant for our creative community.

Mr. Ball’s background as an educator, attorney, and writer allows him to connect meaningfully with students who are learning to tell their own stories — a skill that serves them far beyond college admissions.

A Benefit for Allegra Students

Allegra Talks was created as part of our commitment to providing thoughtful, low-pressure enrichment opportunities for our students. This event is being offered at a reduced rate as a benefit for current Allegra students, with limited seating to keep the experience engaging and supportive.

We’re proud to bring speakers like Stephen L. Ball to Allegra — individuals who can inspire, inform, and empower students as they continue growing both as artists and as people.
